The 16 team members in the Barnegat Winter Guard and their manager made history this past weekend at the Atlantic Coast Championships, clinching first place.

The competition began on Friday night, May 3rd with the preliminaries where the team scored an 85.10.  The Semi-Finals, which was held at the Middle Township High School they received an 86.44.  These scores taken together ranked them in first place in the SIG (Scholastic Intermediate Group).

While most of the girls, along with the coaches stayed behind waiting on the scores, four of the team mothers transported seven girls on the team to their junior prom, which was held at the Camden Aquarium.

While the mothers waited for the prom to end at a local Camden eatery, they began to receive text messages that again the Barnegat team were in first place and would be performing on Sunday, May 5.

On Sunday the team went back at the  Atlantic City Convention Center, were they performed their program, entitled: “Love Story” for the last time as a unit.

For those parents that were in attendance cheering this fine group of young ladies on, it was an amazing show, which one parent called a “poetic ballad."

The Barnegat Winter Guard ended the season with their highest score to date, an 89.20, and Barnegat High School’s first ever TIA SIG First Place Championship.

The Winter Guard, which consists of 16 performers and one manager, is the indoor version of the color guard unit, which performs with the Marching Band at football games, parades and other special events.

During their performances, the winter guard works with recorded music instead of a live marching band. Their performances are indoors, and they are judged on choreographic movement, equipment, ensemble and overall performance.  They use flags, rifles and sabres for their routine.
