BOE Pays Lawyer To Help Board Member Who Charged Colleague With Ethics Violations

All members of the Barnegat board voted in favor of the conflict counsel, including the person whom the complaint is against

The Barnegat Board of Education recently voted to authorize a conflict counsel to represent one of the board members, who filed an ethics complaint before the State Ethics Commission against another board member.

The entire board voted in favor of the legal representation - including the man whom the complaint is against - Frank Caputo.

Minutes posted on the board's website, show details of the vote, taken Dec. 18, 2012. The motion read: "New Business Motion #5, to authorize conflict counsel to represent D.P. and/or others as petitioners filing Code of Ethics charges before the S.E.C. against F.C. arising out of  issues as presented and discussed in closed session."

According to sources close to the issue, the counsel was hired to represent Board member Denise Pilovsky, who filed ethics charges against Caputo. Pilovsky declined to comment on the matter, citing confidentiality, and referred questions to the attorney, Adam Steuerman. Steuerman was not immediately available for comment. In board minutes from June, 2012, Steuerman's fee was quoted at $135 an hour.

Caputo did not immediately return a call for comment.

Superintendent Karen Wood did not immediately return a call for comment.

Here we go again. Another taxpayer-funded political orgy courtesy of the BOE. The only victor will be the lawyers. Win, lose or draw, the lawyers get paid. The losers - the taxpayers. Win, lose or draw, the taxpayers pay.
Local Board of Ed must be abolished. The majority of people on these Boards have zero educational credentials. They are ill-equipped to understand let alone make decisions that impact academics. The infighting and shenanigans on the Barnegat BOE are legendary. The administration of school districts needs to be centralized if we are ever to see meaningful cost controls. Educational costs have skyrocketed and much of that is due to the incompetence of amateurs. When NYC schools were placed under the direct control of the Mayor, costs were reduced and standardized test score went up. These asinine episodes of bickering kill morale and are a poor example for students.

Hey Eric, some very concerned and constructive thoughts that I am sure are shared by many. I love your passion on issues, especially when I'm inclined to agree with you. And Larry, thanks for the food for thought. Perhaps the community would be better off restricting membership on the BOE to high school juniors and seniors. It would certainly enhance the students’ college applications while providing them with a first-hand experience they can share with their schoolmates on how the political system shouldn’t work.

When you vote for the wrong people you get what you have, a far better candidates application should be required, the public should be better informed about those that run for office and if attention had been paid the person responsible would not have been elected, I hate to think that I have to pay for Lawyer fees because and elected board member does wrong, come on board members wake up.

This November three educated individuals was elected to the BOE. This could be good for Barnegat but instead 2 or 3 BOE members are upset that they will lose their POWER and CONTROL and are trying to force one member off the BOE. This man has 37 years of education behind him and has served on 3 or 4 school boards with many mentions of honor, Now is our chance to turn the education around and control taxes by watching our spending. I heard Barnegat will never change its shenanigans but we can all hope, THIS IS OUR CHANCE LETS NOT BLOW IT!!!
Again why do we have to make attorneys richer , tax payers like myself pay more money, and take money out of the pockets of our children . WANTING POWER NEVER STOPS AND DOES NOTHING BUT HURT THE INNOCENT PEOPLE.

President, if you really care about the children, why would you keep the UNEDUCATED people in charge of certain committes. They will keep harrassing you until you resign. They want the CONTROL!! Look what they have done over the past few years, BOE is in debt over $1.3 million dollars. That makes alot of sense to put in charge agai!. Be careful President they are trying to get you out as well so they can have the CONTROL again. Wake up! It's for the children. Obviously they just want the POWER.
Do any of the board members have children or grandchildren in the school district? Yes the EDUCATED ones that were voted in by the community, the people that care. Not the UNEDUCATED ones! And lets waist the money for the "children" on attorney fees. $135/hour...do the math. Again put us in debt further. Its It shouldnt be a POWER and CONTROL issue! It should be about the children!! UNEDUCATED members should work together with the EDUCATED people! Maybe they can work together and learn something and get us out of debt so we can further educate the children.
