Bengals Blitz: Gearing Up for the Stretch Run

A look back at the past week in Barnegat High School sports along with a look ahead

Baseball: After dropping the two early week games this week against Brick Township and Matawan, the Bengals bounced back in a big way with a win against Lakewood and a nine inning thriller over Toms River East in the Ocean County Tournament. The contest against Lakewood was a 14-4 win, which only required five innings of play. While they saved two innings against the Piners, they played two extras in their 2-1 win against the Raiders of Toms River East on Saturday. Nick Fraim continued his excellent freshman campaign going 1-for-3 with the game winning RBI single in the top of the ninth as Mark McCoy locked down a scoreless ninth, his sixth inning of work on the day.

Barnegat can clinch a share of the division title if  they win their final two division games and Manchester drops their last division game. Barnegat will travel to Lacey for a game a 3:45 game on Monday and have another road trip on Tuesday to Jackson Liberty, again at 3:45. In their final divisional game of the season, the Bengals will host Central Regional at 3:45 on Wednesday.

Softball: The Lady Bengals have continued to add to their strong season, with wins against Lakewood and Brick Township this week. In beating the Piners, Barnegat scored 18 runs in the shortened game only lasting four innings. The win comes after another victory on Monday, which saw the Lady Bengals defeat Brick Township 7-2. Valerie Carcasses was unstoppable going 5-for-5, scoring two runs and adding an RBI. Emily Gambuti earned the win while striking out two.

The Lady Bengals schedule will mirror the baseball teams schedule as well for the upcoming week.

Boys Lacrosse: Barnegat lacrosse takes a big step forward this week, qualifying for the Shore Conference Tournament. After beating Monsignor Donovan 8-6 early in the week, the Bengals fell to powerful Rumson-Fair Haven later in the week 14-2. Qualifying as the 16th and final seed, the Bengals will have to visit the top seeded RFH Bulldogs again this week. While it is a tall task, the experience gained of the SCT is something that will hopefully be leaned on in the next few years.

After playing the Bulldogs in the SCT, the Bengals will have games against Neptune and Oakcrest High School later in the week.

Girls Lacrosse: The lengthy win streak of the Lady Bengals was snapped this week, as the Lady Bengals bowed out in the first round of the Shore Conference Tourney to 4th seeded Manasquan. Barnegat drew the 13th seed. The 15-3 loss came at the hands of the toughest test the Lady Bengals had all year as Manasquan was 11-3.

Tuesday and Wednesday the Lady Bengals will travel to Central Regional and Ocean Township respectively, with each game starting at 3:45. On Friday, Barnegat will return to their home turf for a 3:45 start against MonDon.
