Bengals Blitz: Making History

Barnegat High School athletics week in review

Baseball: In largely uncharted territory for the Barnegat Bengals, senior Mark McCoy and junior Rob DeSanti pieced together a gem. Doing so, they delivered Barnegat their in the South Jersey Group II tournament. DeSanti gave visiting Collingswood all they could handle with four shutout innings on the mound. McCoy closed out the final three innings, getting six of the final nine outs by strikeouts. McCoy was tagged with an unearned run as the Bengals won 5-1. 

PJ Pansini gave Barnegat all the scoring they would need in the first inning with a 2 RBI single.The duo of DeSanti and McCoy were also superb in the batting box as well. DeSanti was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and McCoy was 1-for-2 with a double and also scored two runs.

The win gave Barnegat a berth in the second round, where the Bengals season concluded with a 12-2 loss against Haddonfield on Friday.

Softball: Also making history were the Lady Bengals, . In the first round the Lady Bengals defeated Overbrook with a 3-0 shutout. The real thriller came in the next round against Sterling. Emily Gambuti was magnificent throwing nine shutout innings and went 3-for-4 at the plate. 

In the fateful ninth inning, Taylor Moehring was on third base for the Bengals. Valerie Carcasses was at bat, already 2-for-4 on the day with a triple. Carcasses reached on an error bringing home Moerhring and sending Barnegat to the semi-final game against top seeded Buena Regional High School. That game will be played on the road, Tuesday, at 4:00.

On Saturday, the Bengals took on the Indians of Toms River South in the second round of the Shore Conference. The Bengals fell 3-0.
