Fishermans' Flea Market Set for Saturday

Event will benefit Barnegat High School's Fishing Club

Fishing enthusiasts from southern Ocean County and beyond will descend on Barnegat High School Saturday for the school's third-annual Fishermans' Flea Market, a well-loved shopping event that benefits the BHS Fishing Club.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., more than 60 vendors will offer rods, reels, tackle, clothing and even kayaks at low prices. In addition to taking advantage of savings on gear, attendees have the chance to win door prizes throughout the event, including summertime charter trips on the Carol Ann out of Barnegat Light.

The popularity of similar markets inspired Fishing Club advisor Capt. Brett Taylor to create the fundraiser. Now, the yearly event supports fishing trips and scholarships for the more than 40 students in the club.

Vendors come from as far away as Maryland to participate, Taylor said.

"What's nice is that they realize it's not for a profit – it's for the kids," he said. Those that join in the event are helping inspire enthusiasm and environmental stewardship in the next generation. "My whole goal is to get the kids involved in the outdoors, and get them to respect what we have," said Taylor.

Admission is $3 for adults and free for kids 12 and under. Get to the cafeteria early, Taylor said, "because there's usually a line."
