Southern Regional, Barnegat High Schools Fare Well In School Ratings

Southern Regional High School received a top grade in a recent assessment of public high schools throughout the state.

The Manahawkin-based high school received an "A", with an average SAT score of 1480, a 3.2 percent increase from 2008. The median price of a home in the district is $369,400, the study on NJ.com. found.

Barnegat High School was not far behind, with a "B" grade and an average SAT score of 1438, an 8.2 percent increase from 2008. The median price of a home in the Barnegat district is $272,200, according to the assessment.

Both Southern Ocean County school districts did far better than neighboring Lacey Township, which received a "D" grade in the study.

Inside Jersey’s public high school ratings used a new formula in 2013, and compared results during a four-year period rather than one year, to look for student achievement trends, according to the study.

The study used data from the state Department of Education, including High School Proficiency Assessment scores in language arts and math and SAT scores.

"The results separate the best schools from the worst using the same four letter grades your children see scrawled across their assignments — A, B, C and D," the study states.
