Harvey Cedars Residents to Bus Their Safety Concerns to Freeholders

The Harvey Cedars Taxpayers Association plans to petition the Ocean County Freeholders by the busload at Wednesday’s meeting over a proposed traffic lane reconfiguration in the borough.
The group has rented a bus to carry its members to the meeting in Toms River. On Monday morning, association vice-president Kathy Ries said reservations have already “almost” filled the first bus and they were looking into renting a second one.

The association is calling for the county to approve changing the traffic pattern on Long Beach Boulevard in the borough to one lane in each direction with a center turning lane. The purpose of the change is to allow for the widening of the shoulders that they claim are now dangerously narrow, said Ries.

According to the association’s website, “Anyone who has crossed the boulevard during the height of the summer season knows that it is one dangerous proposition. It is even worse for those who venture out on a bike, run, walk, or push a baby stroller. I am sure you agree that these simple pleasures should not equate to taking our lives in our hands. To date we have been very lucky as to not experience a fatal accident in town, however, if the situation remains, that luck will inevitably run out.”

The Harvey Cedars Board of Commissioners has already enacted an ordinance for the change, according to Ries. But the county must agree to the plan as Long Beach Boulevard is a county road, she added.

Recently, Freeholder Jack Kelly was quoted as saying, “The Boulevard affects all the towns and is the main road on LBI, so what the other communities say about it is important before we make a commitment to it …. It is not like everybody in Harvey Cedars and other towns want this to happen.”

Ries said, the buses are open to anyone who wants to attend the meeting, and they can register via the Website http://www.harveycedarstax.org/ or call 609-312-9705. The bus(es) will depart Sunset Park in Harvey Cedars at 2:30.

The freeholders will meet at 4 p.m. in Room 119 of the Ocean County Administration Building, 101 Hooper Ave., Toms River.
