Lots To Do this St. Pat's Weekend In LBI/Manahawkin Area

Looking for something to do this St. Patrick’s Day weekend after that corned beef and cabbage?

How about taking in an independent film or a local production of a Broadway musical?

Then maybe get in a little charity run on Sunday to work off those carbs.
First up is Justin Rigby’s first feature film, “Either/Or,” which will be screened this Saturday, March 15, 7 p.m. at Island Baptist Church, 215 Third St. in Beach Haven. Rigby will also be there for a Q&A session after the film.

The Lighthouse Film Festival is sponsoring the event as part of their on going film series leading up the festival this Spring. Admission is $5 and free to Lighthouse members.

There is an old New Yorker magazine cartoon of a canine sitting at a computer with a caption that reads something like “No one knows you’re a dog on the Internet.”

That concept is sort of the basis of Rigby’s film, in which an unnamed man agrees to a series of challenges for money being offered on a Web site by a character named “Lucky.” The man’s efforts will be broadcast over Lucky’s site and grow increasing difficult as the game goes on.

There is a moral here I’m told, and I’m envisioning Lucky turning out being someone like Al Pacino in “The Devil’s Advocate,” but maybe George Burns in “Oh God.”  Don’t you love surprise endings?

Up at the LBI Foundation of the Arts and Sciences, 120 Long Beach Boulevard in Loveladies the outcome is definite.

Somebody has to win “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” The six-night run over two weekends is the premier performance on LBI by the Bellarine Theater, which holds summer shows at Pinelands Regional High School in Little Egg Harbor.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for seniors and students. They may be purchased online at bellarinetheatre.com, by phone at 609-661-2083 or at the door. Seating is limited. The dates are Mar. 14,15,16 & 21,22, 23 with a reception following the opening night performance.

The name says it all as to what to expect from this Broadway hit musical comedy.  It’s a fictional spelling bee set in ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six awkwardly pubescent children compete in the bee run by three very quirky grown-ups.

Hilarity ensues and maybe some education for the audience. I mean who can spell “Cystitis” or “Acouchi” now, let alone use them in a sentence or a song.
On Sunday, whether you choose a movie, a play or a night filled with food and libations at any number of local restaurants or pubs, you can don your green and get a good stretch of your legs for two great local organizations.
