Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) has been popular on Long Beach Island for years.
Now floating yoga sessions are catching as yoga studios are joining forces with SUP and surf shops to offer floating classes at various bayfront locations on LBI.
Sunday mornings in the summer, LBI Surfing and Devotion Yoga hold a class at Bayview Park in Brant Beach. Attending recently were two good friends from Washington Heights, NY on their first visit to the island.
Sophie Milkowski, 18, said she has been a devout yoga practitioner for years, but had only been on a board once before.
For Abigail Ferreria, also 18, it was all a new experience, she said. Both took a introductory SUP class given by LBI Surfing and then followed up with the yoga class with instructor Sarah Bond. Ferreria was hesitant at first, but Bond convinced her to give it a try.
“The boards are anchored in shallow water, so if you fall off all you have to do is stand up and get back on,” said Bond.
Both girls only took the plunge once each during the hour long session and paddled ashore apparently ecstatic from the experience.
LBI Surfing teams up with other island yoga studios such a Yoga Nine and Liquid Bliss for classes, including sunset sessions, at various locations on LBI from Harvey Cedars to Beach Haven.
Classes are also available through other LBI surf and SUP
shops such as Island Surf and Sail in Ship Bottom and South End Surf ‘N Paddle in Beach Haven.
