by Patricia A. Miller

A top expert in beach quality has Long Beach Island as one of the top spots in the country with the best water quality, according to an article in Men's Journal.

Stephen P. Leatherman - "Dr. Beach" - a professor at Florida International University, recently rated beaches throughout the country in terms of water quality and suitability for swimming. Long Beach Island's 18 miles of beaches were one of the top nine.

"Long Beach Island has some of the clearest water I've seen in New Jersey," Leatherman says. "It's pretty much in the high 70s, maybe low 80s."

Long Beach Island was recognized among other prestigious beaches such as Siesta Beach Florida, Lanikai Beach Hawaii, Coronada Beach California in his top nine, said Lori Pepenella, DMO Director for the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce.

"The article fits in wonderfully with the effort of the entire Jersey Shore tourism community," Pepenella said."As a close-knit community of Destination Marketing Organizations, we have been working to send out positive and accurate information to help visitors take advantage of the complete experience."

The Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Chamber members operate a year-round visitor center at 265 West Ninth Street in Ship Bottom, 609 494 7211 or online at www.visitLBIregion.com or social media as LBI Region.
