St. Mary’s ‘Nights of Summer’ Carnival Celebrates 20 Years

St. Mary's "Nights of Summer" runs this week.

Father Ken Tuzeneu of St. Mary’s church in Manahawkin said that 20 years ago, he was “originally just going to have food for an annual fundraiser." Everyone said, ‘you’re crazy!  We got to have rides!’”

Twenty years later, the St. Mary’s event this week is still featuring more than one dozen carnival games and rides. The event runns through Sunday night from 6 until 10:30 p.m.

This week, carnival-goers walked around the premise with their large stuffed animal prizes in anticipation to go on more rides and to play more games.

Geri Atzerk, a church volunteer, said that, “This is our 20th year and some of us have been here, volunteering, for 20 years.”

Inside and outside of the church, the grounds have been flooded with volunteers and carnival-goers of all ages.

Atzerk said that, “Even Father Ken gets into the dunk tank.”  She continued to say that, “The carnival is such a great community event with everyone – young and old – and so many volunteers.  That’s why we do it.”

There is something to enjoy for everyone who participates, organizers say.  Amid the raffles, lights, and cotton candy, is a community.

The carnival is being be held at the St. Mary’s Parish Center located at Bishop Lane and McKinley Avenue, behind the Manahawkin Wal-Mart.

Admission and parking are free and hours are 6:30 to 10 pm.

Father Ken said that, “It’s the second year on this site and I love the spirit and how friendly people are.”  He added that, “God is very good to us with the weather.  I owe him one.”
