St. Nick and Mrs. Claus were escorted around the township during the past few weekends by Barnegat Fire Company, Station 11.
Some members of the Barnegat Fire Company Station 11 had to cut short their escort of Santa and Mrs. Claus last night, because their fire truck was needed on the scene of a fire at 17 Schooner Avenue. Fire Company President Gary Brown told Patch the company were just about finishing up their last tour of the township with the famous couple, just before 8 p.m. when a call came in for a fire in the garage area of a house at that location. Although he said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said it was believed to have started in the garbage. Brown said the fire was quickly extinguished and there were no injuries. "Santa continued with the rest of his route, but we had a response truck that was escorting him that was …

Truck replaces older truck from the 1980s.
The newest addition to the Barnegat Fire Company, the 105' ladder/pumper 1115, can now begin taking calls following training yesterday. Fire Company President Gary Brown noted that the company last month took delivery from Pierce on their newest truck, (see photo), but the company could not begin to use it until training on the equipment took place. Brown said the $780,000-piece of equipment replaces a truck that dates back to the 1980s, and was "badly needed." The truck was purchased out of a township emergency services bond that also provided for new protective gear, and other emergency vehicles in town, including six new police sport utility vehicles that were purchased for around $50,000 a piece, according to Township Administrator …

Wing event raises about $2000 for company
A wine, beer and food tasting event held this weekend helped raise about $2,000 for the Barnegat Fire Company. Barnegat Fire Company President Gary Brown said that the company hosted about 200 people. "Our big lesson learned for next year is that we shouldn't compete with the Decoy Show and Chowderfest," Brown said, adding that even though he felt that hurt attendance a bit, he was very pleased. The wine, beer and food event featured several Barnegat restaurants, and a "Best of Barnegat Wings" contest, which was judged by those in attendance. Featured restaurants included: Sweet Jenny's, Lefty's Tavern, Doyle's Pour House, Marchioni's Pizza and Pasta, Serpico's, Shore Fire Grill, Sub Busters, and Naple's Pizzeria. Third place went to …

Saturday afternoon blaze left three homes uninhabitable
The Lexington Boulevard fire that damaged three housing units and sent two residents to the hospital over the weekend started accidentally when items stored close to a hot water heater ignited, an official said Tuesday. An investigation by the Ocean County Fire Marshal Division determined that combustibles in a hot water closet under the stairs at 65 Lexington caught fire Saturday afternoon, starting the destructive fire, said Deputy Fire Marshal Brian Mount. The residence where the fire began was severely damage in the blaze, Mount said. "The whole unit suffered extreme heat, smoke and water damage as well as heavy fire damage to the first floor and the front of the second floor," he said. The one-story unit to the right sustained some …

Pet cat died in Wednesday morning blaze; family displaced
An initial investigation shows the Wednesday morning house fire that displaced a Settlers Landing family was started accidentally in an upstairs bedroom, Deputy Fire Marshal Brian Mount said Thursday. Combustible materials placed too close to a heat source appeared to have ignited, sparking the fire, Mount said. The family, two house guests and two dogs escaped the flames unharmed, but a pet cat died in the fire. "It burned down the hallway, got up into the attic and burned the attic completely from side to side," he said. Officers responded to a call of a fire at 37 Cannonball Drive shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, said Lt. Keith Germain of the Barnegat Township Police Department, and found the occupants out of the house and …
