Five Things You Need to Know About Earth Day

Learn who founded Earth Day and why we celebrate it April 22.

Today marks the 44th annual Earth Day, a celebration that began in 1970 as a protest movement against pollution. Here are five facts about why we "go green" every April 22. 1. We have late U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson (D-WI) to thank for the official Earth Day celebration. But many credit John McConnell, an activist who proposed the day at a National UNESCO Conference in 1969, with founding Earth Day. While McConnell’s earlier Earth Day Proclamation received support from top United Nations officials, Nelson's work to have national teach-ins on April 22, 1970, spurred the national movement that became known as Earth Day. Both men commonly are referred to as Earth Day’s founder. 2. Nelson’s push for Earth Day stemmed from years of frustration …

I am sorry but there are seniors in this town that should not be driving under any circumstances. As I personally witnessed not too long ago. Then, he sat in the car for at least 5 minutes, before he opened the door and VERY SLOWLY got out of his car with a…   more ›

Op-Ed: Storm-Water Runoff, Why the Trickle Became a Flood

Ironically, the DEP's computer isn't smart enough to make the call when it comes to storm-water regulations.

By R. William Potter (R. William Potter is a partner in Potter & Dickson, a Princeton-based law firm. His views are his own and not necessarily those of the firm or of any client.) Ever wonder why there is so much flooding, even after a light rain? You can blame the runoff -- or most of it -- on a decision by the Department of Environmental Protection to let a computer make the call as to whether major development projects comply with key storm-water regulations. What's more, if the computer rules in favor of a developer, the DEP's experts are sidelined. And the public is cut out of the review process. That's all of the public by the way, even downstream property owners who are on the receiving end of the runoff from "impervious surfaces…

Beach Haven West Resident

They go ahead and build homes to a certain elevation (!) and everyone is off the hook for FEMA's new elevation requirements except the people that were in authority and gave the okay to build. The Homeowners …   more ›
