Jacobs becomes the only African-American head coach in the Shore Conference; will be paid a stipend of $6,800, superintendent says
Central Regional has a new head football coach for the Golden Eagles. Willie Jacobs, a 1990 Central graduate, replaces Vincent Casale, who held the position for five years while also serving as the district’s athletic director. Casale will remain as the school’s athletic director, Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides said. The 41-year old Jacobs is the only African-American head coach in the Shore Conference. He spent the last two seasons on Casale's staff as defensive coordinator, Parlapanides said. Before coming to Central, Jacobs worked at Long Branch High School under Head Coach Dan George. Department of Defense announces that Marine Cpl. Christopher M. Monahan died on Monday on combat duty
Sadly, there will soon be five plaques at Central Regional High School's War Memorial for fallen alumni killed in foreign wars. Almost a month to the day after the memorial was dedicated, Marine Cpl. Christopher M. Monahan Jr. was killed on Nov. 26, the Department of Defense announced today. Monahan, 25, Island Heights, died while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, the defense department said. He was assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 2, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, the D.O.D. said. Central's Mahoney sets meet record in 100 breaststroke
The action in the pool was nonstop Saturday night at the Ocean County YMCA for the Shore Conference Boys Swimming Championships. Fans and spectators came from all over the Shore to Toms River to see the best high school swimmers in the conference compete and even a few break records. By the time the 11 events were over, Christian Brothers Academy toppled the competition, winning the team title for the 22nd time as the Colts amassed 413 points and finished in the top five in nearly every event. Both Toms River North and Toms River South looked impressive, finishing in second and third with respective scores of 209.5 and 189. Show has been expanded with more exhibitors and more family-oriented events
Duck decoy exhibitors from as far away as Ohio and Virginia will be making their way to Central Regional High School tonight to set up for the 28th Ocean County YMCA's Annual Art and Decoy Show. The show will be held on Saturday and Sunday in the Central Regional gymnasium and will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. "We'll be doing more family activities," said Janet Sellitto, the YMCA's special events coordinator. The show includes family craft activities, and exhibitors of wildfowl carvings, decoys, songbirds, antique decoys, books, wildlife artwork, prints, photography, life-size and miniature artwork, maritime artwork and original watercolors. Event at Central Regional High School gym will feature decoy carvers and artists
The intricate art of wildfowl carving will be on display at Central Regional High School this weekend at the Ocean County YMCA's 27th annual Toms River Art and Decoy Show. Decoy carvers from up and down the East Coast are expected to attend the event, which will feature a wide array of exhibitors, artists, jewelers, supplies and a decoy carving contest, said Janet Sellitto, administrative assistant and special events organizer for the YMCA. "Everything is for sale," she said. The show will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday in the high school gymnasium.
