Tyler Burt joined Congressman Jon Runyan at Capital Hill Tuesday night.
Tyler Burt walked through an underground tunnel on Capital Hill before entering the House Chamber where he would sit among hundreds of Congress members, Tony Bennett and President Barack Obama. Burt, a senior at Lacey Township High School, was selected to attend the State of the Union address on Tuesday night with Congressman Jon Runyan. “It was cool,” he said. He arrived with his mother in Washington D.C. Monday night to enjoy a day of sightseeing on Tuesday, visiting the Holocaust Museum and other landmarks before arriving at Capital Hill. Students at Lacey Township High School join together with staff from the Department of Environmental Protection in the second Barnegat Bay Blitz
A little bit of rain didn’t stop the second Barnegat Bay Blitz as approximately 45 Lacey Township students enthusiastically made their way out into the woods surrounding the high school to pickup trash and debris. “The Barnegat Bay is one of our treasures,” said Bob Martin, Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protect, which ran the cleanup effort. Martin told the high school students that Governor Chris Christie is concerned the bay is dying and has developed a 10-point restoration plan, which addresses areas such as nutrients going into the waterways and stormwater basins as well as education. The Blitz fits in with action item number eight in the plan, which calls for increased education efforts to foster public stewardship …

Name: Erin McGuire, 17, Lacey Township School: Lacey Township High School Accomplishment: Erin is ranked in the top 2 percent of her class with a grade point average of 4.66. She is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and has been on the high honor roll throughout her time at Lacey Township High School. Her SAT scores also exceed the 1,400 mark in math and critical reading. Key to Awesomeness: Erin is well rounded, selfless, and humble, Principal Will Zylinski said. Erin is a member of the gymnastics and track teams and has been awarded for her academic excellence as a varsity athlete. Name: Giana DiMicco, 17, Lacey Township School: Lacey Township High School Accomplishment: Giana is a four-time varsity letter winner of Lacey Township High School’s Coed Cheerleading Team. She made varsity as a sophomore and was Co-Captain her junior year and Captain her senior year. Giana competed with the cheerleading team at the Elite Coed Competition, placing third in the nation. She was named National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) All-American Cheerleader for four years and Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) All-American Cheerleader for three years. THIS WEEK’S SPOTLIGHT: ○ Name: Nicole Cafiero, 17, Lacey Township ○ Accomplishment: Nicole cheered for the high school football team for four years and is the captain of the COED Cheer team, which placed third in the nation in 2011. Aside from athletics, Nicole has maintained honor roll every marking period. ○ Key to Awesomeness: Nicole is also very involved in volunteer work. She helps coach Pop Warner Cheerleading, volunteers at cheer clinics, and mentors the Lacey Middle School cheerleaders. Nicole has taken college courses at Ocean County College and plans to attend Richard Stockton College upon graduation to earn a degree in Nursing.
