Oceanfront homeowners between Manasquan and Barnegat inlets are being urged to sign easements necessary for a beach renourishment project to get off the ground by May 1, officials said Thursday. U.S. Rep Jon Runyan (R-3) wrote to the mayors of a number of northern Ocean County municipalities this week urging them to secure all necessary easements for the massive dune and beach project by May 1, the date the Army Corps of Engineers must submit a work plan to Congress. The project's design – which would include the construction of approximately 25-foot high dunes, 75 foot wide berms and 175 acres of dune grass in the project area – was completed in 2007, but has languished after some oceanfront homeowners refused to sign easements that would…

An open letter to: President Obama, All the members of Congress, Governor Christie and members of New Jersey Senate and Assembly and to local mayors and council members. MY DESCENT INTO MADNESS BY WAY OF THE RABBIT HOLE Super Storm Sandy has displaced seven people in my family. We all lived in Seaside Park, New Jersey. We are no different from the thousands of people who are facing what seems like insurmountable obstacles towards rebuilding our homes, our lives and our communities. During the height of the storm our local rescue workers, emergency personal and police were heroic in their efforts to save lives and mitigate damages. The weeks following the storm were also filled with countless stories of families, neighbors, friends and …

Governor surveys Seaside Park, vows to keep state's rebuilding needs on minds of nation
Speaking from a mangled boardwalk unlike the memories of his Jersey Shore childhood, Gov. Chris Christie said the Ocean County barrier island was still too unsafe for residents to return to, but vowed a return to normalcy for most of New Jersey on Monday. "The power will be on, schools will be open, water is safe, gas is available," Christie said as he described what Monday in New Jersey will look like. "We're ending the power restoration phase," he said. "On Monday, we begin the rebuilding phase." He pledged all power would be restored Sunday, that the evacuation of Long Beach Island would be lifted Saturday, and gas rationing would end before the new week. Monday, Christie would begin the discussion of how to rebuild that which is …

Tips from Jersey Shore lifeguards on how to get out of a rip current safely.
Water temperatures are warmer this month than they have been in the past three Junes. For Senior Lifeguard Daniel Desantos, this means that him and all other lifeguards need to aware of more people visiting the shore and getting into the water. “I’ve worked as a lifeguard at Seaside for seven years. I’ve learned that we always have to be alert, whether the water is calm like today or if it is hurricane like,” Desantos said. After the loss of life at Seaside Park and Asbury Park last week, lifeguards have been on high alert watching out for rip currents and swimmers who may be trapped in them. One of the biggest tips that every lifeguard spoke of was the same: Only go swimming when lifeguards are on duty. However, at 6 p.m. lifeguards at …

Death ruled as accidental drowning, Ocean County Prosecutor says
An autopsy has determined that the body recovered 150 yards off the O Street beach in Seaside Park Thursday is a Bayonne man who disappeared in the surf after being hit by a wave. Forensic pathologist Dr. Hydow Park ruled that Bestavros Faris, 18, died of accidental drowning, Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said today. "At this time I would like to extend condolences to the friends and family of Mr. Faris," Ford said. Faris and three other friends weren't on the beach Wednesday afternoon more than five minutes before three of the men ventured into the water, a witness told police. "He watched them on the beach for a short time," Seaside Park Patrolman Steven Shadiack said."One stayed ankle-deep. The others went from ankle-deep …

Autopsy next step to identify victim, prosecutor's office says
A body was discovered near the O Street beach in Seaside Park this afternoon, close to where an 18-year-old man disappeared in the surf Wednesday afternoon, Executive Assistant Prosecutor Michel Paulhus said. "They did recover a body," he said. "They are going to schedule an autopsy to make a positive identification. It was found in the general area where the swimmer was reported missing." The body was discovered by the New Jersey State Police's Special Operations Section about 150 yards southeast of the O Street beach, Patrolman Steven Shadiack said. State Police had been searching the area with a side-scan sonar device towed by a 23-foot patrol boat. State Police Lt. Stephen Jones said. The body was discovered submerged in 18 feet of …
18-year-old Bayonne man failed to resurface yesterday afternoon
Emergency personnel have resumed their search for a young man who disappeared into the surf Wednesday afternoon off the O Street beach. Seaside Park lifeguards are on full-time duty today, just one day after Bestavros Faris, 18, Bayonne, went into the water off the unguarded beach with three other friends around 3 p.m. All four got into trouble, but Faris was the only one who didn't make it back to shore, Patrolman Steven Shadiack said. A resident who lives on O Street saw the four youths on the beach before the incident occurred, Shadiack said. "He watched them on the beach for a short time," he said. "One stayed ankle-deep. The others went from ankle-deep to waist-high, then chest-high. The wave came. Three went under the water and only …
