RFH Boys Break Record In Win Over Southern

This is the third Shore Conference Title garnered by the team.

The third time was definitely a charm for Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School's Boys Lacrosse, as the team broke a record by earning its third Shore Conference Title (SCT) in a row. The team won its final SCT game at Monmouth University this week against Manahawkin's Southern Regional with a 14-5 score, parents told Patch. Right at the onset, in the first quarter, RFH led, 4-0. By the end of the first half, the team had scored 11 to Southern's 3. And at the end of the third, the score was 14-3. They ended with the 14-5 win. A special thanks to Fair Haven Mayor Ben Lucarelli and other parents who kept Patch updated and sent some photos. If you have any you'd like to add, please upload them directly to the story or send them to elaine.…

MATES Students to Southern Board: 'Let Us Compete for Scholarships'

Arguments on both sides of the policy change presented to board.

Southern Regional Board of Education members heard from several students and parents of both Southern and MATES schools at the meeting last night on a policy change enacted last summer that prevents MATES students from applying for scholarships through Southern Regional. Sharon McKenna, who has one student  at MATES and two others in the Southern system, said she felt "like the seniors are getting the rug pulled out from under them." McKenna joined a chorus of parents who said the policy should have been voted on and enacted three years from now. She urged the board to consider distinguishing between academic and community scholarships, since, she said, the MATES students are precluded from applying for community scholarships because of …

This story seems a little "off" to me. I was one of the MATES Parents who spoke up and only ONE parent said the policy should be "enacted three years from now"...the rest of us believe it should be as every other township in this County is---you are a resident of that town and you are eligible for all of the scholarships that people/businesses/donors offer. As for how many students were for or …   more ›

Southern Regional Feels Long-Term Effects From Sandy

Board of Education discusses $56 million budget.

The Southern Regional Board of Education last night discussed the district's $56,475,439 budget for next year, but exactly how much of that will have to be raised from actual tax dollars remains to be seen, according to Business Administrator Steven Terhune. "This year is unique because of Superstorm Sandy," Terhune told the Board and public at a budget meeting. "We don't know what each impact will be, because we don't know what the ratable base is going to be. An added wrinkle is that FEMA has loans that are available to schools and counties that have been severely impacted in their ratable base [by the storm]." Terhune said the district is applying for those FEMA funds, and that Gov. Christie's office have given affected school districts…

Event was open to all community, including emergency responders.

Southern Regional Middle School hosted a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal Nov. 22 from noon to 3 p.m. Southern officials noted this event was open to anyone, including the emergency responders who have rallied to help the Stafford area following Sandy. The event was sponsored by Mud City Crab House, Black-Eyed Susans Cafe, Shore Fire Grille, Taylor Made Cabinets, Southern Regional Education Foundation, David's Dream and Believe Cancer Foundation, Jetty, and the Boy and Girl Scouts of New Jersey.  Kate Krier, a Stafford resident, volunteered to help out with the effort, and she said "the support in the community is amazing. Hundreds of people have reached out in a very short period of time, with food, their time, and supplies." Krier gave …

Southern Regional ROTC Program Recognized by Air Force

Program has more than tripled in size in 5 years.

Five years ago, the ROTC program at Southern Regional was on "life support," according to the program's director, Col. Michael Mestemaker. A combination of state increased academic requirements, which reduced the ability of students to take electives, and the opening of the Barnegat High School dropped Southern's ROTC enrollment to 56 students, landing the program on a probationary status. This year, however, that number has jumped to 175, and that growth in enrollment, plus all the good work the program has been doing, led to Southern's ROTC program being one of only three in the state to be recognized by the Air Force for distinguished service. At Southern Regional's Board of Education meeting last night, Mestemaker presented that …

Money will be divided among three local districts

A bridge walk held this past weekend raised about $9,000 for Stafford, Southern Regional and Long Beach Island School Districts, according to an event planner with the walk. The Parent-Teacher Associations of Stafford Township Schools and the Long Beach Island School District with the Special Education PTA of the Southern Regional School District hosted their Third Annual Community Bridge Walk event on Saturday, Sept. 22. The opening ceremonies for the walk started at 9:30 and the walk started at 10 a.m. from Mud City Crab House in Stafford.
