Barnegat Goes Out to Bid on Dock Work

Rebuild slated by Memorial Day.

Barnegat Township is going out to bid for various work that need to be done to rebuild the municipal dock, and it is looking possible that the dock will be rebuilt by Memorial Day weekend, according Township Administrator David Breeden. Breeden noted at the Committee Meeting Monday that the township engineer has put together a proposal to put out to bid, specifically encompassing materials, structural work, and bulkhead repair at the dock, which was heavily damaged during Sandy. Biddig would begin on March 14, and "we expect a quick turnaround," and to award the contracts on Monday, March 18. Breeden said as was initially done with the dock, "we are attempting to do a majority of the work with in house Public Works personnel."

One suspect located hiding in clothes dryer.

Two Barnegat residents have been arrested and charged following a burglary of cash and property at Lefty's Tavern. She hid in the dryer?! That reminds me of when I was 3 and ran away from home because my mom wouldn't give me a cookie before dinner. I hid in my friend's dryer when she found where I was. Great minds must think alike! LMAO   more ›

Barnegat Teen Invited to Danbury, Conn. to Perform "26 Kisses"

Teen received a standing ovation at Township Committee meeting.

An 18-year-old Barnegat youth received a standing ovation and brought some to tears at a Township Committee meeting held this week, during which she performed her song for the Newtown school shooting victims. Michelle Lombardi wrote the song, “26 kisses” a few days after the shootings, she said, and she is scheduled to perform her song at three memorials in Connecticut, one of which is in Danbury, Conn. this Sunday. "I am a liberal arts major at Ocean County College right now, and eventually I want to teach elementary school," Lombardi said in an interview with Patch. "I think that is why this has affected me so much." Lombardi posted her song on Facebook - and through the power of social media - the song has taken off, leading to her …

Sandy-Damaged Cars No Longer Permitted to Be Brought to Johnson's Pit Site

Mayor says site looks 'like a parking lot.'

According to an agreement between Barnegat Holdings LLC and Barnegat Township, Sandy-damaged cars will no longer be brought onto the Johnson's Pit area. Township Administrator David Breeden told those in attendance at the committee meeting Monday that as of Dec. 8, vehicles were no longer allowed to be brought to the site. However, this was several days after the issue first came to the attention of township officials, and by that point, some 5,000 cars had already been brought to the site. "It's like a parking lot at a stadium out there," Mayor Al Cirulli said in remarks to the town. After initiating legal action last week against the property owners, Breeden said, the two parties came up with terms of a consent order, which are still …

Committee Bids Farewell to Cirulli, Melchiondo

Both welcome new committee members.

Committeeman Len Morano last night presented a plaque to outgoing Mayor Al Cirulli and Commiteeman Jeffrey Melchiondo at the regular Township Committee meeting last night. "I and the rest of the committee just want to thank them both for their years of service," Morano said.  Cirulli and Melchiondo both thanked the committee, and others in the township for working with them over the years, and wished luck to the new committee members that will take office in January.  Challengers Elaine Taylor and Susan Conway defeated Melchiondo and Cirulli, who have been serving on the committee since 2004, who ran on the same Republican ticket. "I want to say congratulations to Ms. Conway and Ms. Taylor, and wish them the best. I am certain they want …

UPDATE/PHOTOS: Barnegat Township Officials Dedicate 9/11 Memorial

Dedication held earlier today.

In front of Barnegat Township municipal hall stands a reminder of one of the most tragic events in history, which - similar to the tragic event yesterday - brought many across the world together in grief and reflection. It is with the spirit of reflection in mind, that township officials planned a memorial to 9/11 - which includes a beam from the World Trade Center - and a dedication for that memorial earlier today. The dedication was originally planned for Sept. 11 of this year, but township officials said the event was postponed because almost all of the materials and labor for the memorial were donated, and the volunteers handling these materials were delayed with paying projects. Then Sandy hit, and work was diverted once again. At the…

Kate, I have a friend on the First Aid Squad who said that the ambulance was the one who called the accident in. They just happened to pull up on the accident right after it happened and no one had even called 911 yet. Police responded right after and were on scene quickly. The ambulance just happened to be returning from another call and saw it. Which would explain why police werent on scene yet…   more ›
