Although much work remains to be done, particularly in the Holgate section, months of rebuilding efforts following Sandy have helped bring many popular attractions in Long Beach Island's Queen City, Beach Haven, back to life, just in time for summer 2013. Beach Haven has a vast collection of shops and restaurants than much of the rest of LBI, as well as big attractions such as the Fantasy Island arcade and a Thundering Surf Water Park, making it a popular vacation and day-trip destination. First Aid Squad President: 'The sense of volunteerism is not what it was when I was growing up.'
As the spring air warms and summer approaches, Beach Haven First Aid Squad President Deb Whitcraft said she is becoming more concerned about the number of people about to descend upon Long Beach Island. Membership on the first aid squad has dropped in recent years, as some members of the first aid squad have been displaced following Sandy, and others have aged. Whitcraft is worried as the summer population swells, the squad - and other volunteer first responders on the island - may not be able to keep up with increased demands. The Beach Haven Volunteer Fire Company 1 will receive $108,830 in federal funding from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to train and hire new firefighters. The funding, awarded through FEMA's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) and Assistance to Firefighter Grant (AFG) programs, "will help provide New Jersey fire departments with the tools and staffing they need to keep our communities safe,” Senator Frank R. Arcade will be open Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Since Sandy pushed about 10 inches of water into the arcade room at Fantasy Island in Beach Haven crews have been working "nonstop" to get the arcade opened again. This weekend, that effort will pay off, as the arcade holds its official “Grand Re-opening," according to Kelly Wyckoff, the park's assistant marketing director. Wyckoff said the arcade usually stays open throughout the winter, so the fact that they can reopen is a return to "normalcy." She said crews have been checking the games to make sure they are in good working order and ready for this weekend. The arcade will be open starting at noon on Saturday, Feb. 16, and Sunday, Feb. 17, as well as at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb 18. There will be prizes for people throughout the weekend. …

Clean-up and restoration with a dose of humor all go hand in hand as Long Beach Island recovers from Sandy.
Long Beach Island residents - except those from Holgate - returned to their homes Saturday morning, beginning at 6 a.m. During a Friday afternoon news conference in Seaside Heights on Friday, Governor Christie announced that the Route 72 causeway bridge will be open. Christie said the state will allow residents controlled access to assess damage, retrieve belongings and permit repopulation of the island for residents whose homes are safe and habitable. Here is a short photo tour before Saturday's reopening. People should procede with caution as there is still a lot of work going on and dangerous conditions in many areas.

Owners asked to meet in Manahawkin today and tomorrow.
Beach Haven business owners with perishable food, and only those business owners, will be given access to Beach Haven today, from noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The Borough of Beach Haven Public Works Department will collect disposal items. Business owners are asked to meet at the old Pathmark in Manahawkin, 517 Route 72 West. There will be a police escort for these business owners from the Beach Haven Police Department. The demolition of a Fairview Avenue home sparked controversy last month
A steady stream of noisy trucks and the installation of pilings for a new home on Fairview Avenue in Beach Haven has Council members investigating what type of ordinances could be put into place to limit demolition projects of this magnitude during peak summer months. Council President Robert Keeler addressed the issue Monday night at the regular Council meeting. "We're still collecting information," Keeler said. "Sometimes, towns go ahead and they put ordinances in play without doing do diligence, and we just want to make sure we're doing all our homework before we introduce anything." Contract retroactive to Jan. 1 of this year
BEACH HAVEN - The Borough Council authorized a contract with the Borough's Public Works Department, which grants either a 2% wage increase or $900 in the next year, for all 19 department employees. Municipal Manager Richard S. Crane said the four-year contract will run from Jan. 1, 2012 to Dec. 31, 2015, and will allocate wage increase for the 2012-2013 years, of either 2% each year or $900, whichever amount is greater, and for 2014-2015, 2% or $950, whichever amount is greater. Crane said that the contract also takes into account longevity payments, and includes adjustments of about $350 per year for the five employees that qualified for longevity payment. Fundraising event drew hundreds to Beach Haven
Ten-year-old Thomas Erwin, who is visiting Beach Haven with his family this week, sat happily eating a chocolate baked good in front of an old chair that once occupied the office of long-time Beach Haven physician Dr. William Dodd. Meanwhile, Thomas' mother, Maura, pointed out some of the local and nautical memorabilia around the Long Beach Island museum, while also sampling some chocolate goods.
