It's Sweep Time at the Beaches

Clean Ocean Action's twice-yearly event is set for 9 a.m. Saturday at sites all along the coastline

In the 1970s, there was a television ad that depicted a stream choked with trash – aluminum cans and old tires, among other things – and the ad would cut away at the end to a Native American man with a tear running down his cheek. The ads, of course, urged people not to litter, because of what it was doing to the environment. If those ads were done today in New Jersey, the Indian would be a Lenni Lenape, and he’d be standing on a shoreline choked with plastic bottles and caps, because those are the most commonly discarded items on the beaches of the Jersey Shore, according to Clean Ocean Action. Get Ready to Sweep the Beaches This Weekend with Clean Ocean Action

The 26th annual fall beach cleanup is expected to include more than 3,000 volunteers at nearly 70 sites

Those are just a handful of the more unusual items that have been found during the annual Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweeps, where volunteers hit the beaches and the waterways to remove thousands of pieces of debris from the sand, the riverfronts and even underwater at sites throughout New Jersey. Last year, volunteers collected more than 475,000 separate pieces of debris, according to Clean Ocean Action’s annual beach sweeps report. On Saturday, more than 3,000 volunteers are expected to join in the 26th annual fall event at nearly 70 locations throughout the state. Tavia Danch, education coordinator for …

Local residents volunteer to help keep Barnegat's beaches clean

More than a dozen volunteers participated in Clean Ocean Action’s Beach Sweep on Saturday morning at the public beach on Bay Avenue in Barnegat. “A lot of this stuff comes from the island,” said John Durasky, Clean Communities Coordinator for Barnegat Township, who was overseeing the small operation that collected washed-up garbage along the public bay beach. He cited storm-drain runoff as one of the main contributers, as litter from the streets makes its way into the local waterways. Despite the trash that still inevitably washes up, Durasky says that the beach has definitely seen an improvement over the years. Maxine Blumenthal has been involved in the Beach Sweep for years, and agrees that there has been a continual improvement in the …
