Surf City Volunteer Fire Company extracts at least one victim from broadsided minivan in Ship Bottom Monday evening
All four occupants of two vehicles involved in a two-car crash at the intersection of Central Avenue and 9th Street in Ship Bottom were transported to the hospital on Monday evening. According to unconfirmed reports from witnesses, police and emergency responders, an eastbound gray Jeep allegedly attempted to pass through the intersection of 9th Street and Barnegat Boulevard and struck a southbound white Honda minivan as the light was changing around 6 p.m. Monday. As a result of the collision, the broadsided (T-boned) minivan turned 90 degrees, vaulted the curb in front of the Wawa strip mall and struck a vehicle in the parking lot. Emergency responders from the Surf City Volunteer Fire Company were needed to cut at least one person, …

Band play special set of music for victims, families
Eleven-year-old David Connelly is too young to recall the original World Trade Center. But this Saturday, Connelly, his father, the senior David, and his brother, Sean, all of Barnegat Light, paused with the other members of the Ocean County Emerald Society Pipes and Drums band to remember all that happened there on September 11, 2001. The youngest Connelly just passed his test to become a member of the pipe and drum band. He joined because, he said, "my dad and brother are in it, and I wanted to join too." As part of their performance at the Ship Bottom Irish Festival this weekend, the band performed three songs to remember the tragedy - including When the Saints Go Marching In, When Irish Eyes are Smiling, and Amazing Grace. "A lot of …

After being cut short on Saturday night by the weather, Sunday's festivities picked up where they left off.
Ship Bottom’s 7th annual Irish Festival began Sunday with a Mass in both Gaelic and English before moving on to the festivities. Sponsored by the local Ancient Order of Hibernians’ John P. Holland, Division 4, the weekend-long festival was set to offer food, drinks, music and of course dancing on Sunday. “We had to cut things short last night, but we hope to make up for it today,” said AOH member Kevin Lyons. He said a strong storm front that moved through around 7 p.m. on Saturday had vendors packing up early and caused the concert by Shortly Long and the Jersey Horns to be cut short. On Sunday though, it appeared, as the Irish would say, “the Good Lord took a liking to them.” Under the tent that would soon feature Irish pipers, step …

Woman was unconscious and not breathing when she was pulled from the surf off 27th Street beach, police say
Three people were in the right place at the right time early Tuesday evening when they saved a woman off the 27th Street beach in Ship Bottom, police said. The woman - whose name has not yet been released - was struggling in the rough surf on the unguarded beach around 6:45 p.m., said Sgt. James Butler. "She was floundering in the very rough surf and tumbling in the water," he said. Fortunately, the woman was spotted by Michael Ems, East Hampton, and Catherine Ghee, Connecticut. When the two pulled the woman from the surf, she was not breathing, Butler said. Sixteen-year-old Grace Campbell — a Morris Township teenager who lifeguards at Culver Lake in Sussex County — was playing beach volleyball nearby when two of her friends started …

Approximately 20 homes are still without water and a portion of Central Avenue remains closed while repairs are underway.
SHIP BOTTOM--- A water main break at 25th Street and Central Avenue flooded the roadway late Tuesday afternoon and severely dropped water pressure in the borough, according to the head of the Borough's Water and Sewer Department. As of 6:30 p.m., his crew had located and engaged an isolation valve to control the flow and keep the break from potentially affecting the entire borough, said Randy Giberson. “We had the level in the water tower drop to only 12 feet and that is really low,” he said. “At this point we have about 20 homes without water, but hope to have that down to less in the next few hours,” he said. The homes are all between Central Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard between Ship Bottom Avenue and West 24th Street. When the …

A lighting strike is just one of several calls the Ship Bottom Volunteer Fire Company had responded to by late afternoon.
SHIP BOTTOM — A bright flash of lighting exploded close to this reporter around 2:30 p.m. It appeared to have struck the home at 3103 Long Beach Blvd. in Brant Beach. A few minutes later that was confirmed as trucks from the Ship Bottom and Surf City volunteer fire companies responded to the scene as well as Ship Bottom and Long Beach Township Police and the Beach Haven First Squad. Firemen went up onto the roof of the home, which was damaged, but fortunately there was no fire. A Ship Bottom volunteer firefighter who was on the scene said the lighting had apparently struck the chimney. He also said this was one of only eight “weather-related” calls so far this afternoon as thunderstorms and strong winds blew heavy rain across Long Beach …

A luxury homebuilder from Stafford Township has been indicted on charges of money laundering and theft, authorities said Wednesday. David Haugland, whose companies specialized in luxury homes on Long Beach Island, is accused of fraudulent acts that cost investors more than $1.1 million, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office. Prosecutors allege that Haugland convinced investors to put up money to redevelop plots of land he owned on the island – land that he, in reality, did not own. "Haugland induced the investors to give him money to finance the construction of new homes on these parcels, yet neither he nor his company, or any entity controlled by him, ever owned or had authority over the properties in question," said Proseutor…

61-year-old man was from Mount Laurel
The man whose body was found floating near the former Intracoastal Waterway channel that hugs Ship Bottom was identified as a 61-year-old Burlington County man, police said. State Police Sgt. Julian Castellanos identified the man as John Mee of Mount Laurel. A passing boater discovered his body floating upside down at about 8:20 p.m. Friday, police said. He was found near an abandoned personal watercraft that was floating near the easternmost bridge of the LBI Causeway in the former intracoastal waterway channel which runs along the middle portion of Long Beach Island's bay side. Dozens gathered in Ship Bottom on Saturday morning as the Ocean County Chamber of Commerce hosted its first Ceremonial Season Beach Opening Event, signaling the official start to summer on Long Beach Island. Chris Schwab, president of the Chamber of Commerce, explained that Long Beach Island hosted a similar event many years ago, and he felt that with a positive economic outlook for the coming summer, it would be fitting to bring back the ribbon cutting. “Rentals are up this season,” said Schwab, indicating that the increased rentals will most likely result in giving local businesses a boost. Jerry Thompson of the Chamber’s Board of Directors said that LBI was chosen as the site of the ribbon cutting due to not only its geographic …
