Musical comedy will begin May 24 and continue through June 16.

Surflight Theatre, under the leadership of Executive Director Ken Myers presents the 1920s musical comedy The Boy Friend, from May 24 through June 16. Sandy Wilson’s 1954 musical comedy, The Boy Friend, is a recipe for gleeful romance: Take a rich young girl, a poor boy who’s employed as a messenger, a group of happy flappers, some well-intentioned adults. Mix carefully with a new romance and a re-kindled one. Add “jazzy” music. Put dreams in the lyrics (“I Could Be Happy with You”) along with exuberance and joy in the dances (“Won’t You Charleston with Me?”). Surflight Theatre has announced its 2013 Season Opener - Thank You for the Music - A Modern Tribute to ABBA running two weeks from April 23 to May 4. Opening night is Thursday, April 25 at 8 p.m., and follows months of repair and rebuilding efforts following Sandy, according to theatre spokesperson Charlie Siedenburg. "Work continues on Show Place Ice Cream Parlour, The Marketing/Group Sales/Grapics Office, costume shop and storage. Also, they are nearing completion on the tech department and rooms," Siedenburg told Patch. "This weekend the theater's lobby will be painted, and new carpeting will be laid at a date to be announced. Surflight Theatre officials have announced the appointment of Waretown’s Jessica O’Brien as Director of Education and Manahawkin’s Stacey Schnepp-Stoops as Group Sales Coordinator. “We welcome Jessica and Stacey and look forward to a successful season and the growth of departments,” said Surflight Theatre Executive Director Ken Myers in a prepared statement. Jessica O’Brien joins Surflight as its new Director of Education. Jessica has an M.A. in Theatre from Villanova University, and a B.A. in Theatre Performance/Musical Theatre from Marymount Manhattan College. Shortly after Sandy, a group of fairly recent Surflight Theatre alumni, spearheaded by Michael Blackmon-Ham - who worked at Surflight over the course of several seasons - joined forces via Facebook, and banded together to help the LBI community. The group of organizers reached out to the Southern Ocean County Community Foundation (www.soccfoundation.org), a non-profit organization that supports the seven food pantries located in Southern Ocean County. Since the storm, the food banks have been even more challenged to meet the needs of their local populations. Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven this week received a $10,000 grant from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation for the purpose of the remediation and restoration of equipment lost due to the effects of Sandy. Ken Myers, Executive Director said in a prepared statement: "We appreciate the support of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation who responded immediately to our need with emergency post Sandy funding. This kind of prompt support illustrates their ongoing commitment to the arts." Surflight Theatre will hold local auditions for chorus roles in Irving Berlin’s White Christmas on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Beach Haven School Gymnasium, at 700 Beach Avenue. White Christmas, with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin and book by David Ives and Paul Blake, will be directed and choreographed by Norb Joerder. Rehearsals are scheduled to begin Oct. 29 in Beach Haven with matinee and evening performances from November 23 through December 21.
