Man Struck By Car on Route 72

Police are investigating.

Stafford Township police are investigating the cause of a pedestrian collision that occurred early Sunday morning on Route 72 across from the Kohl's Store. 

Police said a vehicle operated by Keith Mulrooney, 24 of Barnegat was merging onto Route 72 west from West Bay Avenue around 12:30 in the morning. Mulrooney started to check his mirrors for Route 72 traffic so he could switch lanes. At this time, several males were crossing the roadway after leaving Applebee's.

One of the party's crossing is identified as Cupertino Lopez-Ramirez, 38 from Guatemala and his cousin Guillermo Ramirez-Lopez, 35 of Guatemala. Cupertino Lopez-Ramirez was struck by Mulrooney's vehicle, suffering severe injuries. 

A third unidentified male who was with Cupertino and Guillermo crossing the street fled the area prior to police arrival, police said. 

Lopez-Ramirez was transported to Atlantic City Trauma Center for treatment. No charges have been issued at this time, Patrolman Justin Pascale is the investigating officer. Any witnesses or other information can be sent to 609-597-1189 X8436.
