Two Injured, One Flees Scene After Route 72 Accident

A Manahawkin man is facing several charges after he fled the scene of a Route 72 accident near Mermaid Drive involving three vehicles, Stafford Township police said.

Trevor McMahon, 41, was charged with failure to report a collision and failure to report a collision with injury in connection with the 6:28 p.m. accident on Tuesday near Mermaid Avenue, police said.

McMahon's Ford Econoline van was stopped in traffic on Route 72 westbound when he was struck by a 1999 Infinity operated by Chris Fitts, 33, Forked River, said police.

Fitts' vehicle car had heavy front damage. He was not wearing a seat belt and was seriously injured. He was taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center for treatment, police said.

Fitts will be charged with careless driving and failure to wear a seatbelt, said police.

McMahon fled the scene after the crash and was located by Barnegat Police on West Bay Avenue a short time later, police said.

A third vehicle driven by Jazmin Jimenez, 27, Manahawkin, sustained minor damage from McMahon's vehicle after it was hit by Fitts' vehicle. Jimenez was stopped in traffic in front of the McMahon vehicle. Jimenez was uninjured, police said.

Stafford Township Patrolman Justin Pascale is investigating.
